AI boom diverts funding from crypto startups

Published 493 words 3 min read

TLDR

AIs investment boom is pulling some venture money away from speculative crypto startups, but capital is still flowing into crypto, just more selectively.

  1. AI now captures a majority of global VC, and several marquee crypto funds are broadening into AI and robotics.
  2. Crypto VC funding has fallen from peak levels and is concentrating in stablecoins, tokenization and real revenue infrastructure rather than speculative tokens.
  3. For founders and investors, that means tougher fundraising for narrative coins, but potential tailwinds at the overlap of AI, payments and onchain infrastructure.

Deep Dive

1. AI Soaks Up Venture Capital

Recent data shows AI is the clear magnet for venture money. One OECD-based estimate reports that AI firms received about $258.7 billion of VC in 2025, roughly 61% of all venture funding worldwide, double their share from 2022.

At the same time, prominent crypto-native firms are explicitly expanding their mandates. Paradigm is raising a $1.5 billion fund to invest not only in crypto, but also in AI, robotics and other frontier tech, arguing that developments in AI are too interesting to ignore and not a zero-sum competitor to crypto.

Some market participants go further, arguing that the technological frontier has moved to AI and robotics and that crypto VC fundraising remains at historic lows, despite Bitcoins major price rally.

2. Crypto VC Shrinks And Refocuses

Even with AIs pull, crypto is not unfunded. One snapshot for early 2026 shows crypto-focused VCs still deploying over $2 billion into blockchain projects, with weekly inflows above $400 million.

The mix, however, has changed. Reports highlight a mass extinction event in crypto VC, with capital rotating away from new layer 1s, meme coins and NFT-heavy consumer apps, and toward stablecoin infrastructure, custody, compliance and tokenized real-world assets. Dragonfly, for example, just closed a $650 million fund focused on payments, RWAs and financial rails.

This suggests crowding out mostly for early-stage, speculative crypto projects, while more boring but cash-flow-oriented businesses still attract capital.

3. Implications For Founders And Investors

For crypto founders, the bar is higher. VCs emphasize product-market fit, revenue and regulatory positioning over token hype, and they have an abundant alternative in AI startups competing for the same LP dollars.

The interesting middle ground is convergence. Paradigm and others are already backing projects at the AIcrypto intersection, such as tools that benchmark AI models on smart contract security or enable onchain agents. In parallel, AI-linked tokens and infrastructure are seeing strong narrative and trading interest when big AI names like Nvidia beat expectations.

What this means

Pure crypto for cryptos sake is a harder sell, while ventures that either power stablecoins and tokenization or give AI systems onchain rails may enjoy a relatively better funding environment.

Conclusion

AIs boom is clearly drawing attention and some venture capacity away from traditional crypto startups, especially speculative tokens, but it is not an outright abandonment. Instead, crypto VC is compressing into higher-quality, finance-oriented and AI-adjacent projects. The key for both founders and investors is to recognize this capital rotation and position closer to real-world use cases and the growing AIblockchain overlap.
