European platforms join push for euro stablecoin

Published 552 words 3 min read

TLDR

Several European crypto platforms have formed a new consortium to push traders and businesses toward euro-pegged stablecoins, starting with the EURP token.

  1. eToro and 10 European firms created the Eurpe Consortium to promote EURP, a regulated euro stablecoin issued in France and already live on several exchanges.
  2. The push aims to reduce Europes reliance on dollar stablecoins, align with MiCA rules, and build deeper on-chain use of the euro, though current euro tokens remain small versus USDT and USDC.
  3. For crypto users, this could mean more euro-denominated trading and payments, with adoption, liquidity and upcoming bank-backed euro tokens under MiCA as key things to watch.

Deep Dive

1. Who Is In The Consortium

On 5 Oct 2026, eToro joined 10 European crypto firms in the Eurpe Consortium to promote euro-pegged stablecoins, starting with EURP, a token issued by Schuman Financial in France and backed by regulated reserves through the consortium notice.

Members include exchanges and infrastructure providers such as Assetera, BLOX, Coinhouse, Coinmerce, DFNS, LCX, RockawayX, SwissBorg and XRPL Commons, each expected to support EURP via listings, wallet integrations or infrastructure work.

Schuman is authorized as an electronic money institution by Frances ACPR, holds EURP reserves at banks like Socit Gnrale, and publishes quarterly KPMG reserve attestations, while the token already runs on six blockchains and trades on venues including Kraken, Bitvavo, Bit2Me, SwissBorg and Bitpanda.

2. Why Push A Euro Stablecoin

The European Central Bank has highlighted that dollar-pegged stablecoins account for roughly 99 percent of global stablecoin market value, leaving the euro underrepresented on-chain in spite of Europes large economy and payments footprint.

As of early October, EURP had about 15.5 million tokens in circulation, while Circles euro stablecoin EURC stood near 403.1 million when Revolut began distributing a Stripe-issued euro token, showing both room for growth and multiple competing euro-denominated options.

Separately, Qivalis, backed by 37 lenders including BNP Paribas, ING and UniCredit, plans to issue a euro token under the EUs MiCA regime in the second half of 2026, subject to Dutch central bank approval, which would further tie euro stablecoins to mainstream banking and regulation.

3. Implications For Traders And Builders

For European traders and businesses, more regulated euro stablecoins could mean less foreign exchange risk when using crypto, easier euro-based settlement, and simpler accounting and tax handling compared with dollar-only rails.

The consortiums focus on distribution, wallet integrations and retail and institutional use cases suggests a push to make EURP a standard funding and payment asset on European platforms, not just a niche trading pair.

However, liquidity in euro stablecoins is still thin compared with giants like USDT and USDC, and upcoming MiCA implementations and bank-led tokens such as the planned Qivalis euro asset will shape which euro stablecoins actually gain critical mass.

What this means

If you operate in or trade from Europe, monitoring EURP, EURC and future bank-backed euro tokens can help you judge when euro on-chain markets become deep enough to use as a primary settlement currency.

Conclusion

European platforms are trying to pull the euro onto blockchain rails through a coordinated push around EURP and other regulated euro tokens, challenging the current dollar-heavy stablecoin landscape.

Whether that effort succeeds will depend on how quickly exchanges list euro pairs, how deep liquidity becomes, and how MiCA and bank-backed initiatives evolve, but it clearly signals that Europe wants its own currency to matter in crypto, not just in traditional finance.
