Crypto derivatives see $584M long liquidations

Published 456 words 3 min read

TLDR

Around $584 million of leveraged long crypto positions were wiped out in a sharp 24 hour derivatives sell off, led by Ethereum and Bitcoin.

  1. Total liquidations were about $657.9 million, with roughly 89 percent from longs and Ethereum and Bitcoin accounting for about two thirds of the damage.
  2. The wipeout follows a period of high leverage and was triggered amid broader risk off selling tied to geopolitical tensions, but overall derivatives open interest fell only modestly.
  3. Key things to watch now are open interest and funding rates, Bitcoin and Ethereum support levels, and whether further macro or geopolitical shocks spark another wave of forced selling.

Deep Dive

1. What Liquidated And Where

According to Coinglass data summarized in a recent crypto liquidations report, total crypto derivatives liquidations over 24 hours reached about $657.9 million.

Roughly $584.38 million of that came from long positions, versus only $73.52 million from shorts, meaning leveraged bulls took about 89 percent of the hit. About 106,000 accounts were liquidated, with Ethereum (around $256.83 million) and Bitcoin (about $180.89 million) making up roughly two thirds of the long losses.

The single largest liquidation was an ETH/USDT perpetual worth about $28.5 million on Bitget, highlighting how concentrated positions on major venues can accelerate these moves.

2. What It Says About Leverage

This flush comes after a build up of leverage. Over the last day, total perpetual open interest fell from about $495.46 billion to $474.03 billion, a drop of roughly 4 percent, while futures open interest fell about 22 percent to $2.86 billion.

So a lot of leverage was forced out, but not all. Total global open interest is still around $476.89 billion, and average funding remains slightly positive, suggesting the market still leans net long, just less aggressively.

At the same time, total crypto market cap slipped about 1.6 percent to roughly $2.56 trillion and the Fear and Greed Index sits in Fear, signaling nervous but not capitulated conditions.

What this means

This looks like a strong long squeeze and partial deleveraging, not a full reset of speculative risk.

3. What To Watch Next

  1. Open interest and funding: a further grind lower in open interest and funding moving toward neutral would mean leverage is normalizing, which can reduce liquidation risk.
  2. Spot levels: on the price side, watch whether Bitcoin can hold key support zones flagged by analysts and whether Ethereum stabilizes after leading liquidations.
  3. Headlines and volatility: the selloff coincided with heightened geopolitical tensions; any escalation could quickly translate into another round of forced selling if leverage builds back up.

Conclusion

The $584 million in long liquidations reflects a crowded long side hitting a sudden risk off wall, with Ethereum and Bitcoin futures at the center. Leverage has been partially flushed out but remains high enough that new shocks or trend reversals could trigger more volatility, so tracking derivatives positioning and major support levels is critical for understanding the next move.
